Designing New Research Approaches
There are many ways to understand design. Often people think of ‘design’ as objects – like chairs, posters or buildings – but design is also a process. Most people design, whether they realise it or not. We are designing every time we ask ‘what ought to be’ or consider what kind of change we might want for the future.

At the Australian National University, Viveka Turnbull Hocking is using design to offer new ways of thinking about the research process. Through this PhD study she hopes to develop a design approach that will be useful for researching complex issues within society and the environment.
This design approach to research engages communities in imagining possible sustainable futures. “Sustainability, requires highly innovative changes to everyday life” Viveka says “and that is something we can’t just leave up to the experts”.

One example of this ‘design-led’ approach was conducted in Tumut, a town in rural NSW. Members of the community where engaged in a series of creative activities to design proposals for sustainable wellbeing in Tumut. The study resulted in a series of posters. These showed different ways of encouraging community involvement in social activities for their town.
The next step is to share this design-led approach with other researchers and communities to see how effective it is in achieving positive social change.

Dog Hair
Beanie & Neckgater

I spun my Shiba Inu's hair with a bit of wool. Dyed it orange & blue, then crochet it into this beanie and neckgater for Richie!

Crochet Dress

Crochet Dress

26 May 2010: Just finished this crochet dress. I spun the wool, dyed the yarn and then crochet. Kind of nice to get a bag of fleece and turn it into a dress. Not quite as strange as the mug cozy.

Mug Cosy

The Mug Cozy

My coffee kept getting cold so I had this bright idea to make a mug cozy. It turned into a strange looking brute. The innuendos flew!

Crochet Ski Dress and Pants

Here is the 2009 cross country ski outfit I crochet myself: Dress & Pants. The outfit really worked quite well. When you got going the breeze went through the gaps and helped cool you down. It was very comfy too. But look at that skating technique... horrible!

Here are some pants I made last winter. They proved to be good advertising for the crochet crafts at the Cooma markets last weekend!
